Let’s take a closer look at this sample career path. The entry-level role is the project analyst. In this position, most employees have completed some level of training on projects and have little to no experience working on projects. This role is a support role, where you would gain experience working on a project with an experienced project manager.
The project manager level is where you would have learned how to manage a project on your own. You would be responsible for a small team to plan, execute, and close down a project. The senior project manager level would be achieved after further training, as well as after you’ve shown a track record of success for medium-sized projects. At this level, the projects become larger and more complex.
The responsibility and accountability grow, as does your requirement to lead larger teams and interact with more stakeholders for successful delivery. This is the stepping point to leading multiple projects, which is the next level. The program manager level would be achieved after further training, as well as showing a track record of success for managing large projects or several small interrelated projects.
At this level, the program manager must be able to demonstrate significant business acumen as they will own financial accountability for a large portion of the business as well as own a significant business plan initiative for the organization. And the final level in our sample career path is the strategic program manager level. In some companies, this level is an executive position or a senior management position, where you would own a significant portion of the business. In that capacity, you would be responsible for the development of the organization’s long-term business plan and mission. You would be responsible for the identification of strategic programs and projects that will enable the organization’s long-term vision, for example, where the organization wants to be in five years.
In PMI ACP Certification, development is often still iterative and incremental for speed and learning purposes. And in these cases, development may have multiple releases to staging, or pilot, environment. Verification is run for system-level requirements against use cases, and what this effect looks like are iterations between stage-gates. Each iteration, looking like a typical sprint, and this often is more successful in organizations that resist Agile because of leadership and governance.
